Music & Family
When
trying to find somebody to do this assignment about, the one person I knew I
could go to would be my mother. My mother is a very kind and caring person. Her
passion, determination, and kindness are a driving force that fuels our family.
She truly embodies nurtured love toward me and my 3 younger brothers. My mother
has been married to my father for 20 years, going strong and I just feel as if
it would be a good thing to see where her unique music taste original comes
from.
1) What type of music do you listen to now?
Well, I still love to listen to R&B! You know R&B is my favorite. I really love the smooth harmonies and messages that are in those type of songs. The old school R&B has more soulful lyrics and deep emotion behind them way better than now todays.
2) What type of music did you hear around the house as a high schooler?
Back then in the late 90’s. My mother would play a lot of “Lauryn Hill’s. Then me and her where both big fans of “Fugees”. Basically, a lot of R&B because I can still clearly remember just how hooked we was from listening to Fugees “Killing Me Softly” for the first time. Then listening to "Lauryn Hill's" singing style gave the impression that she was using her voice alone to tell a whole tale too.
4) What music did you listen to coming out of college and why?
R&B and soulful style of music. There were groups like “Jagged Edge” and other that was making that type of music that I loved coming out of college! I think my favorite song was “Walk Outta Heaven” by Jagged Edge actually. Their voices were filled with emotion. Whether they were singing about love, sadness, or simply life, you could feel every word.
5) Who was your favorite artist growing up?
Oh, If I had to pick one growing up it
would probably be India Arie. I remember the first time I heard her song “Get
it together” on the radio with sorority sister. I must’ve have been in my early
twenties, and her lyrics just spoke to me. She wasn’t just singing, she was
telling a story trying to teach a key lesson.
Denard, I really enjoyed reading your interview with your mom, she seems awesome! "Killing me softly with his song" is such a great song, and I've never listened to the "Get it together" on but I also thought it was really good! It's amazing when songs can speak to you in a deeper level and that's so cool that your mom has a great connection with that song!
ReplyDeleteHi Denard! I really loved this interview with your mom, it really made me think of how me and my dad are both big fans of Lauryn Hill and The Fugees as well! Killing Me Softly is such a good song! Your mom seems really cool since her music taste is so great!
ReplyDeleteHello! I love how your mom loves R&B. I’d have to say that’s definitely one of my top genres and I grew up around loads of old R&B songs with my parents as well. I mean it’s impossible to not immediately sing Killing my Softly with His song when it comes on. I also think it’s very sweet that you and your mom share a special meaning when it comes to the love for the song You Bring Me Joy.
ReplyDeleteHello Denard! Your Mother has great taste in music and Lauryn Hill is absolutely a certified artist in the black community. Lauren has a great ability of explaning her struggles in music all while making the person listening want to get up and dance! I also currently have a Lauren Hill tapestry hanging up in my room!
ReplyDeleteI love the song "Killing Me Softly" I found the song in high school and fell in love ever since.
ReplyDeletemy mom also has a similiar taste.
ReplyDeleteI love how fondly you speak of your mother! She has definitely stuck with one genre of music--I admire her loyalty! She's experienced the evolution of R&B throughout the years--I want to be able to do that with my favorite genres too.
